Chinese medicine effective at treating fibroids

Gui Zhi Fu Ling Wan (GZFLW – Cinnamon and Hoelen Formula) appears to result in additional reduction of fibroid volume when added to mifepristone treatment, according to a Cochrane Database systematic review. The formula consists of five herbs: Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Poria Cortex (Fu Ling), Tao Ren (Semen Persicae), Chi Shao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra) and Mu Dan Pi (Cortex Moutan). Its traditional actions are listed as invigorating blood, dissolving stasis and resolving masses. Chinese authors identified a total of 38 RCTs involving 3816 participants that tested GZFLW for uterine fibroids compared with no intervention, placebo, pharmaceutical medication or other Chinese patent medicines. Meta-analysis demonstrated that GZFLW plus mifepristone was more effective than mifepristone alone in reducing the volume of fibroids. GZFLW was also shown to significantly improve symptoms of dysmenorrhoea, both when used alone or in combination with mifepristone.
