Acupuncture for Pain Relief After Total Knee replacement operation

Acupuncture can help control acute postoperative pain after total knee arthroplasty, according to Taiwanese investigators. Sixty patients were randomly assigned to receive verum acupuncture (knee, scalp and auricular acupuncture [AA]) or sham AA. All procedures were conducted under general anaesthesia, and the AA needles were retained in situ for three days. The requirement for postoperative analgesia was lower in the verum acupuncture group compared with the control group, and the time to first request was longer in the acupuncture group. Pain intensity on a visual analog scale was lower in the study group during the first 24 hours after the operation, and the incidence of analgesia-related adverse effects (nausea and vomiting) was lower in the acupuncture group.
