Acupuncture and herbs help with pelvic pain

The UK’s Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has published an opinion paper that supports the use of acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain (CPP) in women. Conceding that conventional treatment of CPP may be of limited effectiveness, the tone of the paper is cautiously pro-CAM, providing the results a comprehensive literature search and a balanced summary of the evidence from relevant acupuncture and CHM trials. It concludes that, although there are currently no reliable studies into the treatment of CPP specifically, there is evidence that acupuncture and CHM can benefit associated conditions such as dysmenorrhoea, pelvic inflammatory disease and irritable bowel syndrome.
