Effects of acupuncture and herbal medicine for premenstrual syndrome/premenstrual dysphoric disorder: systematic review

Results from a Korean systematic review and meta-analysis support the effectiveness of acupuncture and herbal medicine as a treatment for premenstrual syndrome and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Eight acupuncture studies and 11 herbal medicine studies matched the authors’ inclusion criteria. Acupuncture and herbal medicine treatments were found to result in a 50% or better reduction of symptoms compared to baseline, with no reports of any major adverse events. In the case of acupuncture, a reduction of up to 77.8% in symptoms was seen after as few as two to four treatment sessions.
