Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine Treatments for Skin Conditions
Dermatology is an important area of specialisation within Chinese medicine
Chinese medicine is able to effectively treat many chronic skin diseases that are often poorly managed with western medicine.
Many books have been written and much observation and research has gone into the diagnosis and treatment of these often chronic debilitating skin conditions.
The following conditions are most frequently seen in clinic:
- Eczema: pomphlyx, serborreic, atopic and nummular eczema
- Psoriasis: guttate and plaque type
- Acne: teenage, post-adolescent female acne
- Rosacea
- Urticaria: acute and chronic
- Viral infections: herpes zoster, warts, molescum contagiosum
- Fungal infection of the body and nails
Patients are carefully diagnosed by asking a variety of questions relating to the skin condition as well as their general health. The skin is then thouroughly examined and a diagnosis according to the patient’s own imbalance can be made and a treatment plan formulated.
The diagnosis in Chinese medicine is always individual to a certain patient; whilst the broad category of eczema may be the same between two patients, one patient may manifest a very dry itchy eczema whilst the other may show a moist, crusty type of eczema. In Chinese medicine it would be impossible to contemplate to treat these two patients in the same way. Two very distinct diagnosis’ and treatment plans would need to be made.
Treatment involves in most cases herbal medicine and topical creams. Lifestyle and dietary advice is also given, this is often so important in order to address the underlying causative or triggering factors. If stress is a large contributing factor, a course of acupuncture is also advised.
