Acupuncture results in significant subjective improvements in overactive bladder (OB) symptoms

Acupuncture results in significant subjective improvements in overactive bladder (OB) symptoms and may be a clinically relevant alternative treatment for the condition in adult females. In a Chinese study, 240 female patients with OB were randomly assigned to receive either a weekly acupuncture treatment (intervention) or the antispasmodic drug tolterodine tartrate (control), for four weeks. After four weeks, changes in OB symptoms were found to be similar in both groups. Subjects in both the intervention and control groups showed significant decreases in number of urinary urgency episodes, incontinence episodes, daytime frequency, nocturia episodes and an increase in volume voided per micturition.
